Every year the building and development industry recognizes the GTA’s best new projects, marketing efforts and architectural designs for excellence and innovation.
This tradition is called the BILD Awards and on April 28, we will announce winners at our 36th annual event.
The program has evolved over the years as the region and the industry have changed. This year we modernized many of the award categories to make them more reflective of today’s housing market in the GTA and to be more relevant to new home buyers.
One of the most exciting changes is that for the first time we will name two Home Builders of the Year, one in the low-rise market and the other in the high/mid-rise market. Home Builder of the Year is one of our most coveted awards and it recognizes builders/developers who set the standard for the rest of the industry through their professionalism and dedication to excellence.
This evolution is in response to the dramatic shift that has taken place in the new homes market in this region. It used to be that the vast majority of the new housing built by our industry was low-rise homes – single family and semi-detached houses and townhomes. Government intensification policy introduced 10 years ago changed that, and today at least half of all the new homes sold and constructed in the GTA are condominiums in high and mid-rise buildings.
Mid-rise developments are emerging in neighbourhoods across the GTA and you can expect to see more in the near future, particularly in city centres and along transit corridors. We added mid-rise developments to several award categories this year and we introduced a brand new award, the Best Mid-Rise Building Design, to recognize excellence in the architectural design of buildings between five and 11 storeys.
Another major change we made this year was to revamp our architectural design categories for new homes and condo suites. Rather than focusing only on size, as in previous years, this year’s design categories also consider who the potential buyers are and what they are looking for.
Finalists in all 47 award categories are currently available at www.bildawards.com and the winners will be announced on April 28.
