The home building and land development industry in the GTA is shaped and driven by an amazing group of exceptional visionary and hardworking city builders.
As a tribute to the trailblazers who have planned and executed the vibrant, diverse communities we live in throughout the GTA, we bestow our annual BILD Lifetime Achievement Award to one outstanding member who has dedicated their career to building not just homes, but communities.
This year’s recipient is the legendary Al Libfeld, the President and co-founder of Tribute Communities.
Al has been in the industry for more than four decades. In 1974, he started an acoustic and drywall business, and in 1983, he moved on to pursue a career with Tribute Communities, a company that has built more than 30,000 homes in dozens of communities.
Giving back to the communities in which he builds is fundamental to Al’s philosophy of being fully engaged in the neighbourhoods where he builds. Over the years, Tribute has donated thousands of dollars to local organizations including the York University Concert Recital Hall and the Ajax-Pickering Hospital’s state-of-the-art birthing centre.
But it’s Reena, an organization that helps people with developmental disabilities realize their full potential, that holds a special place in Al’s heart. In 2000, Al established the Al and Sheila Libfeld Endowment Fund, which supports vital Reena programs. He also founded and volunteers his time to the Building Industry for Durham Deeds (BIDD), an organization that has raised more than $1.7 million for local Durham charities.
Giving comes naturally to Al, who not only gives back to the communities where he builds, but also to the industry that he loves dearly.
From 1990-91, Al was President of the Ontario Home Builders’ Association and he has also served as Chairman of the Tarion Warranty Corporation and was on its board of directors for 11 years. Al encourages his team to be active leaders in the association. In fact, Steve Deveaux, one of Al’s vice presidents served as past chair of BILD’s Board of Directors.
Al is very humble when he speaks about Tribute Communities’ success. “Of all the factors contributing to the success of Tribute Communities, I have no hesitation in putting teamwork at the top of the list,” he says. “I owe our success and achievements to the vibrant synergy of minds and hearts — working together as a team to take Tribute Communities to even greater heights of excellence.”
A city can’t be built in a day, but it is innovative, creative people like Al Libfeld who make a difference one community at a time.
Al has joined an incredible list of industry titans to receive BILD’s highest honour including builder Ignat (Iggy) Kaneff, CEO and Chairman of the Kaneff Group of Companies; Colin Parsons, Monarch’s past president; Greenpark Chairman and CEO Carlo Baldassarra; The Remington Group’s indomitable Rudy Bratty; as well as the three innovative brothers who founded Tridel, Angelo, Elvio and Leo Del Zotto.
